The Phoenix is one of Londons leading independent cinemas and one of the oldest cinemas in the UK. New mums can watch some brilliant classics, foreign language and specialist films as well as some of the mainstream movies – with baby in tow: Bringing Up Baby screenings are on Wednesday mornings at 11 a.m., with hot drinks and scrummy cake available. Children will aso enjoy Kids club movies on Saturdays at noon.

Went to see the new Woody Allen film at the Phoenix yesterday morning – the best £5 I’ve spent in a long time! I love these Bringing Up Baby screenings – admittedly it is a bit hard to hear the film at times, but who cares when you’ve got Javier on the screen. Anyhow, that ‘s why arty subtitled films work so well for new mums. The vibe was brilliant, and it was such an easy and lovely way to spend a morning. It’s certainly easier with very little babies (feed them to sleep and sit and watch the movie in peace!), but E was pretty happy jumping up and down on my lap chewing on various toys I’d brought along, and some mums with older babies even camped out at the back with their little ones rolling around on picnic blankets. Oh yeah – and there is a great selection of tea and incredibly moist homemade cake (the carrot cake is particularly nice). Surprisingly this is a fairly buggy friendly place, with a ramp up to the front door and then a (very slow) lift, and loads of ‘buggy parking’ room inside the actual theatre (in case baby is already asleep when you arrive!) as well as downstairs.
