Coventry Transport Museum : A great family day out?

This free museum is a great rainy day out, with lots of fantastic exhibits ranging from penny farthing bicycles to world land speed record car Thrust SSC. Theres lots of information aimed specifically at the kids, and areas are made interactive wherever possible. Galleries are themed with the Blitz Experience and the 80s and 90s gallery (where you can see Princess Dianas metro and the Back to the Future DeLorean) There are often half term art/craft activities, and the exhibition space changes regularly – has housed Doctor Who exhibition, loaned exhibits, craft fairs, Santas grotto etc. The museum also houses Esquires coffee shop selling proper coffee and a wide ranges of cakes, sandwiches, paninis etc.

Fab free museum.
I love this place, and regularly visit with my kids (age 4 and 7) for a fun and fascinating FREE afternoon out. My two especially love the Blitz Experience, (which is atmospherically dark) where they can sit in an Anderson Shelter and listen to the sound of the air raid siren, and the exhibition of miniature toy vehicles. I took my mum (in her sixties) recently, and she loved it too, it brought back lots of childhood memories for her which was great as I heard stories I’d never heard before. I wouldn’t say I have any interest in cars, but the way the museum is set up and themed this doesn’t seem to matter, I was still fascinated to see the history of the bicycle and watch the film discussing the scandal of women cyclists (!) and got quite excited to see Princess Diana’s car and Thrust (even though I’d never heard of it before!!). Most of the galleries are quite spacious so the kids can dart about (as they do).
The addition of Esquires coffee shop has added a touch of class, and the kids can design their own milkshake which has had some interesting results! NB There’s no car parking, but the city centre car parks are nearby and are cheaper on sundays and bank holidays.
