Bolton Abbey

samplesamplesamplesamplesample (Days Out) sample

Ruins of a 12th century priory overlooking the River Wharfe in the Yorkshire Dales, with spectacular walking trails, and a couple of cafes. Besides being a superb spot to spend the day (or week!), children will love riding the steam train, especially when Thomas the Tank Engine is on duty.

My kids are 8 and 11 now, but we have enjoyed Bolton Abbey in different ways since they were born. First for walks with the children in the hiking papoose, now the children love to do a 3 mile hike round the woods, Abbey ruins and along the river. In the summer we picnic or have a barbeque and then get the boat out along the river. In the winter we have a hot drink in the cafe and then go for a brisk walk. Hide and seek around the ruins is a must , as is trying to get over the stepping stones by Bolton Abbey bridge. Buffers cafe on the estate serves our favourite chocolate cake. Parking is £5.50 which is for all day and you can use all three car parks. This is fine for us as we will stay all day but is a bit pricey if you cannot stay long with very young children I guess.
