Duxford (Imperial War Museum)
(Days Out, Museums & Attractions, Rainy Days Out)
The Imperial War Museum in Duxford is a large collection of modern, wartime and older aeroplanes in half a dozen hangars that visitors can explore. Exhibits include a Concorde (that you can walk through), a Lancaster bomber and interactive educational displays. There are normally plenty of free family activities throughout the summer and school holidays - check the website for details.
Two of the 3 restaurants/cafes have kids menus: the Mess Restaurant at the visitor's centre is usually open 10 am - 5:30 pm, Wing Co Joe's between Hangars 3 and 4 is open 11 am - 4:30 pm . Both serve hot lunches and a kids menu from 11:30 am - 2:30 pm.
Free on-site transport runs regularly throughout the day, linking AirSpace to the American Air Museum and the Land Warfare Hall via several dropping-off points. There's also a very well stocked shop, regular air shows and special displays.
Free for children aged 0 - 15, £16 for adults.
Note that if you're using sat nav, you may need to use the old postcode, CB2 4QR.

Lots to do at Duxford

We stopped at the Imperial War Museum at Duxford to break up a long journey, this meant we only had a couple of hours there and didn't have time to visit all the different areas, but I think if you did have more time you could easily spend the whole day there. It was £16 per adult to get in, which seemed quite expensive, the food in the cafe was also pretty standard, kids boxes, that type of stuff, but was good enough to keep everyone happy. They also had some good looking cakes that would have made for a great afternoon tea! Most importantly though, the children loved the areoplanes and running around the huge hangars discovering the next plane - a good tactic to tire them out for the rest of the journey; they also liked climbing on stuff whenever possible and there was enough of this (especially Concorde) to satisfy demand! There was a small out door playground which wasn't great, but gave another opportunity to expand some energy. Overall everyone really enjoyed the visit, they were well set up for kids and Duxford would be a great day out.
